Carbs and Kids Posted November 3, 2003 I’m raising my son (age 5) and daughter (age 11) on a mostly vegan diet. We always eat vegan at home but I don’t put too much pressure on my daughter about what she eats at friends’ homes or when she’s out at birthday lunches. The doctor said that my daughter is heavy for her age—and I can see that she is a little overweight. She is starting to feel sensitive about this as well. I’m concerned that all of the carbohydrates we are eating at home could be making her fat and I’m wondering if I should start to feed her some lean meats. I don’t want to put her on a diet or make her feel more sensitive about her weight. She snacks a lot after school, on weekends and while watching tv at night. We also eat out about three times a week—usually at a Mexican restaurant, a Chinese buffet, or a fast food restaurant that has veggie burgers. Read article

Convenient Breakfasts Posted October 27, 2003 I have an hour and a half commute for work in the morning and leave at 6:00 a.m. I usually end up not eating breakfast because I don’t have time. By 9:00 in the morning I’m usually starving and end up eating something like a doughnut with coffee. I don’t think the doughnuts are vegan and I know they aren’t a good breakfast. Do you have ideas for really fast things I can eat in the morning that are vegan? Read article

Zinc and Supplements Posted October 6, 2003 I’m a 19 year old male and I’ve been following a vegan diet for 2 years. I’ve read that it’s hard for vegans to get enough zinc and so I take a supplement of 40 mg of zinc per day. Now I’ve read that zinc can cause cancer so I’m not sure what to do. What’s the best way to get enough zinc in my diet. Is a supplement okay? Read article

Cravings for Cheese Posted September 8, 2003 I have the worst cravings for cheese, especially goat cheese. I also have a strong desire to become vegan, as I am already a vegetarian. What nutrients are in cheese? Do you think that eating healthier foods that contain the same nutrients as cheese would satisfy my cravings? Read article
